Summary

Fortunately/Unfortunately is a narrative game for 6-12 players plus two narrators. One narrator is "Fortunately," the other "Unfortunately." Start with a story title from the audience. The Fortunately narrator opens, setting up the main character and place, and the other players physically bring it to life as characters or scenery. Then the Unfortunately narrator says yes to that reality and adds a complication — and the actors embody that too. The narrators keep trading off, building the story beat by beat with each upswing and downturn, while the actors act it all out.

How to Play

  • Pick 2 narrators (Fortunately/Unfortunately) and 6-12 actors.
  • Get a story title from the audience.
  • The Fortunately narrator opens the story; actors embody it.
  • The Unfortunately narrator adds a negative turn; actors embody it.
  • Narrators keep trading turns, building the story beat by beat; actors keep playing it out.

Required Materials

  • Nothing required, beyond a story title from the audience.

Purpose

This builds collaborative storytelling and a feel for narrative structure. You'll practice agreement (saying yes to what's been set up), embodying the story physically, and shaping those fortunate/unfortunate swings.

Variations

  • Can be played in pairs.
  • Can start with "Once upon a time...".
  • Can use "Good News" / "Bad News" instead.
  • Can randomize Fortunately/Unfortunately using playing cards (e.g., Red=Fortunately, Black=Unfortunately).
