Hoedown

Hoedown is a high-energy musical game you've probably seen on Whose Line Is It Anyway? Four improvisers line up and get a suggestion from the audience — a topic, a profession, a situation. It kicks off with all four singing a chorus together, usually rhyming the suggestion with itself. Then each player, one at a time, sings a four-line verse about the topic in an AABB rhyme scheme, all to that same hoedown melody. After every solo verse, the group jumps back in for the chorus. The last verse is traditionally the 'punchline' slot — saved for whoever can land the funniest or cleverest take. Once all four verses are done, everyone belts the final chorus together. It takes quick rhyming, a strong sense of rhythm, and the willingness to be silly with total conviction.

• Four improvisers line up across the stage.

• All four belt the final chorus with extra energy and finish together.

• Stage space. A pianist or backing track helps, but isn't required. And an audience suggestion.

• Hoedown Battle: Two teams of four alternate verses, competing for audience applause.
• Irish Hoedown: Mixes elements of Irish Drinking Song with hoedown structure — alternating lines from different players within each verse.
• Genre Hoedown: The hoedown is performed in a different musical genre each round.
• The accompanist can vary tempo and style between verses to challenge and inspire the singers.
