Summary
"Questions Only" is a classic conversational improv game where you can only speak in questions. Make a statement, stumble, or miss the question, and you'll usually step out or head to the back of the line while someone takes your place. It often starts with a location suggested by the audience. And it's a wonderful first stop when you're introducing folks to conversational improv.
How to Play
- Gather the players, maybe in a line.
- Get a location suggestion from the audience.
- Start a scene or interaction.
- Every line of dialogue has to be a question.
- If someone makes a statement or stumbles, they head to the back of the line and another player steps in.
- Keep it going, with everyone asking questions only.

- You'll usually want an audience suggestion for a location.
Purpose
This game is a great place to start when you're new to conversational improv. Play it well, and you'll find other games click into place, too, because it brings you back to what really matters in a scene. It reinforces good habits and trains specific improv "muscles." And it shines a light on the challenge of responding quickly and creatively.
Variations
- It's similar to Song Titles, where dialogue is limited to song titles instead of questions.
- Can be played purely as an elimination game without replacements.
