New Choice

Summary

New Choice plays out inside a scene, where a designated Caller can stop a line at any moment. Right after someone speaks, the Caller can shout "New choice!". That player then swaps their line for something different, right away. The scene rolls on with the new dialogue. It pushes you to spin up alternative ideas fast and commit to a fresh direction on the spot. You'll get better at blurting out ideas without overthinking, since the pressure can otherwise box in your creativity.

How to Play

  • Pick a Caller.
  • Start a scene with two or more players.
  • As the scene plays, the Caller can shout "New choice!" after any line.
  • Whoever just said that line swaps it for a different one, right away.
  • The scene carries on from the new line.
  • The Caller can keep calling "New choice!" whenever they like.

Purpose

This one builds spontaneity, commitment, and quick thinking under pressure. It nudges you to justify and fold in unexpected changes, like the "new choice". And it's great practice for spinning up lots of ideas fast.

Variations

  • Can also include "New Action" where players change their last physical action.
  • Audience members can be given horns/hooters to signal a change.
  • Players on stage can call "New Choice" on each other.
  • More actors can enter the scene as the game progresses, increasing the frequency of calls.
