Summary
Freeze Tag is one of the most iconic, most-played improv games around. Two players begin a scene from an audience suggestion, moving freely and using their bodies to paint the environment and characters. At any moment, anyone watching from the sidelines can shout 'Freeze!' Both players onstage freeze instantly in their exact positions. The caller then tags one frozen player out, steps into their exact pose, and launches a completely new scene justified by that shape. A player frozen mid-swing of a tennis racket might suddenly be hailing a taxi, swatting a fly, or stretching for the last cookie on a high shelf. The original premise vanishes entirely — the only thing that carries over is the physical position. It teaches physical listening, creative justification, and the joy of dropping one reality for another.
How to Play
- Two players begin a physical scene from an audience suggestion.
- They use their whole bodies to build the environment and characters — the more physical, the better.
- At any point, anyone watching can shout 'Freeze!'
- Both players onstage freeze instantly in their exact positions.
- The caller walks on, tags one frozen player out (who exits), and steps into their exact physical position.
- Then the caller kicks off a BRAND NEW scene justified by that pose — with no connection at all to the last one.
- The remaining frozen player accepts the new reality and builds the scene alongside the caller.
- The game keeps rolling as new players call 'Freeze!' and rotate in.
Required Materials
- Stage space, with plenty of room to move.
Purpose
Variations
- Blind Freeze Tag: The caller doesn't look — they're chosen randomly. The caller must then justify whatever position they discover themselves in.
- Chain Freeze Tag: Each new scene retains one character from the previous scene, creating a thematic chain of connected vignettes.
- Musical Freeze Tag: Music plays — when it stops, everyone freezes, and someone must start a new scene from their frozen position.
- The caller can specify by pointing with 'You!' to avoid confusion about who is being tagged out.
