Summary
Space Jump is a lively spin on Freeze Tag that adds a structural twist: the number of players onstage shifts with every transition. It opens with one player in a solo physical scene. Someone calls 'Freeze!' and jumps in, starting a new two-person scene. The next freeze adds a third player, then a fourth. Once four players are onstage, the flow reverses: each freeze after that REMOVES a player, working back down to one. That final solo player has to find a satisfying ending. It calls for real spatial awareness, since each new player must slot into a position that works with the frozen tableau already there. The push and pull of players makes for a lovely arc — from intimate solo work to crowded ensemble chaos and back to solitude.
How to Play
- Player 1 begins alone onstage, playing a solo physical scene.
- Someone calls 'Freeze!' and Player 1 freezes.
- Player 2 enters, finds a position that works with Player 1's frozen pose, and starts a new two-person scene.
- Next freeze: Player 3 joins for a three-person scene.
- Next freeze: Player 4 joins for a four-person scene.
- From here on, each freeze REMOVES one player — just tap them out.
- Three-person scene, two-person scene, one-person scene.
- The final solo player keeps going until they land a satisfying ending.
Required Materials
- Stage space, with enough room for up to four players moving physically.
Purpose
Variations
- Space Jump with More Players: Build to five or six before reversing — requires even more spatial awareness and creates bigger crescendos.
- Themed Space Jump: All scenes connect thematically even though they're different scenarios — e.g., all scenes involve a common object or emotion.
- Musical Space Jump: Music plays; when it stops, freeze and add or remove.
- Players can call 'Space Jump!' instead of 'Freeze!' to distinguish it from regular Freeze Tag.
