Pop-Up Book

Summary

In Pop-Up Book, one of you narrates a story, often from a suggested title. Everyone else becomes the "pop-up book." As the narrator describes each element, the pop-up players rise or move to bring it to life, adding a visual layer to the tale. The narrator's job is to be clear about the story and what the pop-ups are up to. The pop-up players, meanwhile, get to play with different characters and physical choices. And the story itself usually stays nice and short.

How to Play

  • Pick a narrator, and assign the rest as the "pop-up book."
  • Grab a suggestion for a made-up book title.
  • The narrator tells a story from that title, staying clear about the narrative and what the pop-ups do. The pop-up players begin lying down.
  • When the narrator "turns the page," the pop-up players spring into position, embodying whatever the narrator describes.
  • Pop-ups, play with characters and actions. And the narrator can jump in by "pulling a tab" to trigger an action, or "pressing a button" to prompt a line of dialogue.
  • Keep it fairly short, with a beginning, middle, and end.

Required Materials

  • Nothing required, beyond a suggestion for a book title.

Purpose

This one builds clear narration, physical representation, and collaborative storytelling. You'll practice creating a physical environment and bringing a story to life before everyone's eyes. And it encourages physical spontaneity and character work, all within a tidy structure.

Variations

  • Can start with a 2-person version (1 reader, 1 pop-up) to demonstrate.
  • A simpler version for young kids where the teacher narrates and children pop up.
