Summary
Taxi — sometimes called Taxi Cab — is a beloved, character-driven game. One player is the taxi driver, and three or four others climb in one at a time as passengers. The driver starts out alone, setting up a simple character, maybe just a plain old cabbie. The first passenger arrives with a strong, specific quirk: a particular emotion, physicality, accent, or trait. As they ride along, the driver chats with them and starts — subtly at first, then fully — taking on that quirk. When the first passenger hops out, the driver keeps the trait. The second passenger brings a brand-new, different quirk, and now the driver plays BOTH at once. By the third or fourth passenger, the driver is an absurd mash-up of characters. It's a showcase of character commitment, physical transformation, and the comedy of things piling up.
How to Play
- One player is the taxi driver. Set up a simple driving area onstage (two chairs).
- The driver starts alone, setting up a simple character — just a regular cabbie.
- Passenger 1 enters and 'gets in the cab' — bringing a strong, specific quirk (emotion, physicality, accent, etc.).
- As they talk, the driver starts mimicking and adopting the passenger's quirk.
- Passenger 1 exits. The driver hangs on to Passenger 1's quirk.
- Passenger 2 enters with a NEW, different quirk. Now the driver plays BOTH Passenger 1's AND Passenger 2's quirks.
- Passenger 2 exits. The driver keeps every quirk so far.
- Keep going for 3-4 passengers. By the end, the driver is a glorious, layered mess of characters.
- The driver drops off the last passenger and ends the scene, maybe with a final line winking at their absurd state.
Required Materials
- Stage space. Two chairs (or any simple setup) to stand in for the taxi. An audience suggestion for the driver's starting context is optional.
Purpose
Variations
- Passenger Taxi: Instead of the driver adopting traits, each new passenger enters with the accumulated traits of all previous passengers, and the driver tries to figure out what's going on.
- Reverse Taxi: The driver starts with all the quirks and loses one each time a passenger enters, ending as a neutral cabbie.
- Themed Taxi: All passengers are from the same specific world — e.g., all characters from a certain TV show, historical period, or movie genre.
- The quirks can be assigned secretly by the host (whispered to each passenger before entering) so the driver discovers them in real time.
